DESCRIPTION:The World Health Organisation declared the coronavirus disease
(COVID-19) an international concern on January 30\, 2020. During this infe
ctious disease outbreak\, emerging literature argues that front-line offic
ers’ mental health is at greater risk whilst performing their duties. Ho
wever\, little is known of the impact on the work of professionals in anal
ytical/intelligence roles in police\, law enforcement and justice organisa
tions. Therefore\, this study explored the impact of the current pandemic
on the mental health and wellbeing of professionals working in these roles
. Ten semi-structured interviews were conducted with professional in intel
ligence and analytical roles from different organisations in the UK and te
mplate analysis was used to analyse the transcriptions. Six themes were id
entified namely ‘Reduction of crime rate’\, ‘Split teams’\, ‘Fa
 cilitating offending’\, ‘Isolation’\, ‘Work-life imbalance’\, an
d ‘Insufficient supporting resources’\, From the findings\, it was evi
dent that having teams split with some at home and some at work led to dif
ficulties in communication. Those working from home experienced technical
obstacles in doing their work\, isolation from colleagues and difficulties
maintaining a work-life balance. In addition\, most participants felt sta
ff support resources were not sufficient during this challenging time. Th
us\, the findings highlight the importance of developing effective and sec
ure means of communication for times when home-working is needed\, and str
ategies to help home-workers to create a separation between work and home\
, despite both occurring in the same physical space.
