DESCRIPTION:The lockdown resulting from the pandemic in March 2020 had a hu
ge impact on the National Uplift Programme in England and Wales and the as
sociated training of new recruit police officers in all forces. Overnight\
, all training had to move from the classroom to the virtual space. There
is now a push for greater incorporation of virtual and blended learning pr
ogrammes in police training for recruit as well as in-service officers. We
were commissioned to undertake research to support the National Police Le
arning and Development (L & D) Executive Group by providing an evidence ba
se for what works in virtual and blended learning programmes. As part of t
he broader project we interviewed L & D leads in 17 police forces in Engla
nd and Wales regarding the experience of their organisations with online t
raining during the pandemic and to gauge appetite in the forces (from trai
ners\, trainees and senior leadership) for adopting a blended learning app
roach to underpin all their learning and development efforts. This paper r
eports the findings from the interviews and identifies the benefits and ch
allenges of adopting a blended learning approach from the view point of L
& D leads for police training going forward.
